Spice Without Borders is a global leadership academy and incubator for social change innovation by those at the margins of society who want to enact social change. Through its 6 month catalytic Spice Accelerator Program, she exists to identify and equip a new generation of passionate change leaders from the backyards of society with creative ideas and skills necessary to initiate sustainable ventures that accelerate change through innovation and cultural transformation by organizing people to take action. Participants come from diverse backgrounds; cultural, religious, socio-economic and educational. These could be activists, creatives, entrepreneurs, initiators or innovators. They share this diversity as they work, live and learn together. They are exposed to methods, techniques and theories that are relevant to their personal ideas. To ensure individualized training, Spice Without Borders selects a maximum of 6 – 16 participants per academic year through a vigorous selection process.
Spice Without Borders was initiated by Erick Inghatt Matsanza in the year 2014 and formally registered in Kenya as an international not for profit organization under section 10 of the Non-Governmental Organizations Coordination Act registration on 13th October 2015.
Our corporate identity is a red chili which represents a social change accelerator ready to creatively apply their passions in solving the most urgent problems at the backyard of society, creating more inclusive communities free from all forms of discrimination. They use their uncensored “creativism,” a term that to us means activism at the intersection of creative arts and social justice. A chili never loses its spiciness whether boiled or dried and crushed, a symbol of the inner uniqueness in each individual irrespective of their different abilities no matter what they have to go through in life. It is this spice that we flavour our participants with in our initiatives to find out from within themselves and come up with the most creative ways to accelerate social change. Our corporate identity is therefore that of a square open at the right corner with a red chili popping out symbolizing thinking out of the box without losing the inner spice. Today the red CHILI forms part and parcel of every initiative that is idealized within Spice Without Borders.
Selection to the Spice Accelerator is not based on academic performance or qualification however participants need to have a social change project or idea that will create a mindset change in their community. Be atleast 18 years or older with a basic knowledge in English (reading, writing and speaking, basic knowledge in using a computer and willingness to learn and share their skills with peers and mentors.) They have to be part of the social community they seek to transform.
Our participants join other social change leaders on our platform, SpiceTalks, a catalytic accelerator for intense social change where we identify change leaders from our communities who are privy to social ills and are passionate about accelerating change. On this platform, the leaders creatively share their innovative life transforming social change ideas that amplify social ills and exceptionally spicy ideas from the backyard of society.
We do not discriminate participants in our initiatives based on gender, ethnicity, race, colour, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, socio-economic status, disability or any other status.
